Maclean’s

Editorial Product Design

Background

Maclean’s, Canada’s national magazine, covers politics, culture, trends, ideas, and personalities, focusing on long-form feature storytelling. They lead the national conversation on everything that matters in Canada. Collaborating closely with SJC and Maclean’s editorial team, the Overhaul team and I worked to redesign and improve the user experience of Maclean’s site.

Problem

The previous site struggled with a lack of visual hierarchy, generic design, and poor usability. Readers found it hard to navigate stories, while multimedia content was limited and overshadowed by intrusive ads. The challenge was to modernize Maclean’s digital presence to engage a younger, cosmopolitan audience while preserving its 119-year history.

Approach

As the UI/UX designer for this project, my role was to address the different needs of each stakeholder:

  • Maclean’s Editorial Team: Designed comprehensive storytelling tools for the WordPress block editor and set a high visual design standard, mirroring the print magazine.

  • SJC Team: Designed the site to seamlessly incorporate advertising, newsletters, and magazine subscriptions, balancing content presentation. I ensured that the site was not only for consuming content but also for business revenue.

  • Readers: Aimed to create a modern, visually engaging reading experience, conducting extensive research on best practices for media sites to provide a seamless and future-proof experience.

Outcome

The redesigned site offers a visually engaging, media-rich storytelling experience that is mobile-optimized and aligned with Maclean’s brand identity.
